Well that didn't take long. Only 3 weeks in and I have already broken my new years resolution. I am blaming it on the amazing work going on in the classroom and the lack of time afterwards. Sorry everyone.
We have been looking at measurement this last little while, we are looking at measuring objects using non-standard units (i.e. blocks, counters, paper clips, etc). Our focus is on three rules
1. make sure the items are touching from one end to another,
2. All items have to be the same (if you are using blocks the blocks need to be the exact same size to get a proper measure)
3. Line the items up in a straight line, going across an object will not give you the same result.
The kids have really taken a liking to this and are measuring everything they can find.
In language, we are all at different spots. Some are working on letter sounds, some are working on just recognizing the letters, others are working on making blends and others still are working on reading words. We have lots of activities going on for all the differing abilities, it is really cool to see how they all come together. The SK's are really working on learning their high five words. They are starting to recognize them around the classroom and they are starting to point them out when we do our shared reading. Each little one is working on writing right now too. Some need work on letter formation, some need practice writing down the first sound they hear in the word, others are working on stretching out their words to add more sounds to it, while others still are working on spacing out their work and trying to include more details.
In gym, this week STARR gymnastics is here, so Wed, Thurs and Fri we get to go to the gym for 40 mins of fun with star gymnastics, where we go through different stations they set up for us.
Over the last few days the students have started to show a real interest in dinosaurs. We are using them to help us with our measurement, however, some little ones are also making books and labels for dinosaurs. If you have any toy dinosaurs at home or pictures of them that you wouldn't mind letting the class use, we would love it.
As a class, we have been working towards a goal of 41 tallies. We get a tally whenever we work together and follow the classroom rules. As of today we hit our total, therefore, on Friday we will be having some sort of special day. The kids will vote on it tomorrow and I will let you know what they choose.
Mrs. Kimmerly will be away from us for a little longer. She is at home with an infection that she can't shake and is on her second round of intense antibiotics. She currently has a PIC line and needs IV treatment to help fight this infection. She is hoping to be back with us a week from Monday. We are keeping her in our prayers. Mrs. Leslie Cook has been replacing Mrs. Kimmerly, and has done an incredible job filling in. We love having her with us each day.
