Spring is here!!! And we are loving it! Lots of things are happening in the classroom. We are exploring lots of different things. Construction, plants and gardens and endangered animals. Lots on the go. In Math we are looking at what does 'equals' mean? I am fascinated by all the hard work they have been doing.
In language we are looking at fairy tales and the beginning, middle and end of the story. We are also starting to look at who the characters of the story are. In writing we are focusing on beginning sounds and high five words. We are also looking at syllables in a word and segmenting words.
In Math we are looking at number stories. We will continue to work on building numbers to 5 and ten and also decomposing numbers from 5 and 10. This has been a focus for us for quite some time and will continue to be. It is such an important concept that leads to future math success. Once they can fully understand all the numbers that make 5 and all the number combinations that make 10, they will learn to transfer that knowledge to bigger numbers.
In Science we are exploring the life cycles of different plants and animals. We are also looking at habitats and homes. Our garden and our construction site are a huge hit. If anyone has any building experience and would be interested in coming in to talk to the kids about how to build a house, we would love it.
Just a couple of things...
* Sunscreen - Please put sunscreen on your child each morning before school. If you wish, they can bring some with them to school, however, we encourage the students to apply it themselves. We can guide or assist them if they need it. Please make sure their name is on their sunscreen.
* Sundresses - Many of the girls are coming to school in beautiful sundresses. Please make sure they have shorts on under their skirts/dresses. When they are sitting on the carpet we sit cross legged and also when they playing outside they tend to sit in the grass and you never know what is crawling around.
* Please send your child to school each day with both a hat and a water bottle. The days are getting warmer and we are outside for at least 40 minutes in the morning and then again in the afternoon.
* Flip Flops - although they are a summer favourite for most people, they are not ideal for playing outside. Due to safety concerns, if your child wishes to wear flip flops to school, they will not be allowed to play on the play structure. Also, please keep in mind. Indoor shoes are for inside the school. They are not allowed to trade their shoes when they get to school to wear their indoor shoes outside.
