Well we have past the 50% mark, we are officially half way through our year. It is going soooo fast. We have lots of things happening here at school.
In language we are continuing to learn about letters and sounds. Up to date we have spent time on the following letters...
Aa, Tt, Ll, Ss, Rr, Pp, Ii, Oo, Mm, Nn, Hh, Ee,
We have also been working on the words I, A, am, look, like, play, love, no, the, this, can, me, my, at, snow,
We have been working on rhyming words and syllables in a word. Playing rhyming games like follow me (you say a word and they have to rhyme it, then you rhyme their word and so on), or at this website http://pbskids.org/games/rhyming/ can be a way to help at home.
We are very interested in winter right now, specifically penguins and igloos. We have spent a lot of time researching penguins, their habitats, what they eat and their behaviours. Also, we have moved into igloos and how you make them, we have even created an igloo in our classroom. The little ones are loving it.
In Math we spent some time on measurement, looking at comparing objects, measuring them with both standard and non standard units. We are going to continue with measurement and also explore numbers further. Many of our friends are interested in adding and subtracting, we are looking at building numbers to 5 and 10. Mental math is very important. We work on this daily, asking questions like what is 3 more than 2?; what is 4 less than 5?; Using fingers is a first step in solving mental math problems. Another strategy we are trying to teach the little ones is to count on from the biggest number. We tell them to put the biggest number in their head and then count on. So if the question is 4 + 3 we say 'put the 4 in your head and count 3 more'.
In Science we are exploring magnets, the students are having a whole lot of fun making predictions and asking questions. They are also conducting experiments with materials to discover what objects are magnetic and what are not.
Valentines Day- This year Valentines day falls on Sunday, we will celebrate here on Friday February 12. If you wish to send in valentines with your child, please only put your child's name on them, we will help distribute them to each student. We have 31 kids in our class. We ask that you do not personally address each card as it is too hard to distribute individual cards for each child 31 times.
We will also be having a fun filled friendship day on the 12, we will be inviting a few parents to come in and help out with crafts and games from 9:30 - 11:00. If you are able to help out please email me.
