Welcome to a New Year. We are back in the swing of things and settling in nicely. It was so exciting to hear about all of your holidays and the exciting adventures that the little ones had.
Since being back we are revisiting the letter 'S' and the letter 'N'. We are also looking at the sound blend them make together. Our word of the week is snow. We are learning lots of winter vocabulary words, and the kids are using lots of them in their writing. In our daily writing we are seeing some great progress. It is great to see the progression since September. They have come far.
Our poem of the week is
Snowball
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as can be.
I thought I would keep it as a pet,
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for it's head.
Then last night, it ran away,
But first it wet the bed.
There are so many things we do with these poems. Depending on where your child is with their own language development, you can have them read the words they know. You can read it to them and have them follow as you read. If they are ready they can pick out any of the words they know, or letters they know. You can pick words and rhyme with them, and you can make word families.
In Math, we are looking at measurement. We have been looking using non-standard units (cubes, blocks, our hands, our feet, etc). We are comparing size ordering them from biggest to smallest and smallest to biggest. We are also looking at how to measure; Making sure you line up the objects with what you are measuring and that there is no space in between. We even measured our selves to see which ones of us are bigger than a penguin.
We are continuing to look at numbers and what makes a number. We have talked a lot about numbers 1-5 and looking at all the ways to make a number. Some students are still learning number concepts (what 1 is, what does it look like as a number, in a ten frame, and when counting), etc. Other students are working on building numbers with adding and subtracting, we can do this in two ways, with the numbers themselves, or with manipulatives.
In Science, we are looking at states of matter. Specifically, what happens to water when it is cold, frozen and hot. The kids are very interested in snow right now so we are running with their curiosity and will be conducting experiments to explore what happens to snow in different conditions.
In Phys Ed we are working in hand and eye coordination. We have been having a lot of fun with scoops and balls and targets.

Important news...
It is cold outside, please make sure the kids come dressed appropriately for the weather each day. We are outside for 30 minutes in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Our board cut-off temperature is -25 degrees. Which means that we go outside even when it is cold. If a child is not dressed appropriately we will try to make up for what they are missing, however, if we can not find sufficient clothing then they will need to stay inside.
Please, Please, Please make sure you label all your child's clothing and possessions. We have a very large lost and found just in our classroom alone. If there are no labels in your child's belongings we can not send them home. Many of the students have the same or very similar belongings as well, often they can not identify which piece of clothing is theirs.
Show and Share is back. Your child is invited to bring in something from home to show on his/her day. This is part of our oral language program, the students are getting very good at presenting in front of an audience. They are also getting very good with asking and answering purposeful and related questions. Please email me if you have any questions.
