We are moving right along. One week seems to blend right into the next. Last week we were working on the letter Tt. We are also working on the word "the". Our song for Tt is
Tt
(For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow- First Verse)
Pull down and cross on the top,
Pull down and cross on the top,
Pull down and cross on the top,
To make the capital T!
(For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow- Second Verse)
Pull down and cross in the middle,
Pull down and cross in the middle,
Pull down and cross in the middle,
To make the lower case T!

For T’s a jolly good letter!
For T’s a jolly good letter!

Our song for the word "The" (Hot Cross Buns)

Our chart story for the week is "The Big Cat'
The Big Cat
The big cat plays.
The big cat hides.
The big cat eats.
The big cat looks.
The big cat climbs.
The big cat runs.
The big cat cleans.
The big cat sleeps.
In math we have been working really hard on sorting. The little ones have learned to sort objects into groups by attributes, size, colour, shape, etc. They have been collecting things from all over the class and putting them into groups. We have been talking about sorting rules and playing games called guess the sorting rule, where one person makes two groups. The students in each group have to have something in common, for example, people wearing stripes and no stripes; shoes with laces and shoes without etc. They are getting very good with sorting.
We are going to continue to work on ten frames and recognizing numbers in a ten frame. We are also going to work on mental math, adding numbers like 'What is 1 more than 2?'. Each child is going to be working at their ability. So some may be working on recognizing what numbers are and building and making those numbers and others may be working on adding and subtracting numbers.
We have been showing some interest in animals over the last few days, there has been talk about wolves and penguins. We are going to see where this takes us and it may be our first major inquiry. We have had many many mini inquiries, however, nothing that the whole class has seemed to grasp a hold of and been interested in. We will keep you posted.
This week is anti-bullying week, we have been spending time learning about ways to treat each other. We have been focusing on using nice words, and think about the words we are using before we say them. We have been working on learning the difference between tattling on someone to get them in trouble or telling on someone because they have done something wrong. It is very important for the kids to feel safe, we are not trying to discourage them from telling the teachers when something is bothering them, rather we are trying to give them the tools to help them solve some problems on their own and teach them to use their voice instead of relying on the teachers voice.
We also had a very special presentation from a group called 'Aboriginal Experience". The little ones learned how to use three different instruments. Their voice, rattles and drums to tell a story. The kids loved it, they were very engaged and so excited to learn new music and new stories.
In class we have been using Raz Kids and Dreambox, they are excellent apps which the kids love!! Raz kids is a reading app, it is a program for kids to access books at their level. Some students are ready to start reading, while others are not. This program is great for all levels. The students can either read on their own or they can listen to the books being read to them. Dreambox is a math program, again we use it in class and it is available to you at home. Dreambox is great for reinforcing the math concepts we are working on in class. A note will be going home this week for both apps and login information.
Christmas Concert - Our annual Christmas Concert is Thursday December 17th, at 2pm. You and your family are all invited to come and celebrate Christmas by attending our concert. As well, you are invited to come back to your child's room to visit and meet with other parents. Children are asked to wear Sunday best.
Some house keeping items-
Just a reminder that we ask that you put names in all your child's belongings. Mitts, hats, sweaters, coats, boots, socks, scarves, even spare clothes.
-Many of the little ones are coming to school with toys. Students are welcome to bring toys in for show and share, however, they are to stay in their bag throughout the day until it is their show and share time and then these items go right back into their backpack. We ask that you help us with this, please do not send toys to school and help remind your little one not to bring them to school either.
- Speaking of Show and Share - We are going to put show and share on hold until after Christmas. Over the course of the next few weeks we will be practicing our Christmas songs for our concert and we need as much time as we can get.
-Healthy snacks- we encourage you keep your treats to one a day especially with all the Halloween treats. If a child doesn’t like a particular food in their lunch bags, we tell them to keep it in the lunch bag so Moms and Dads will know they don't like it. It is not because they did not have time to eat it. Snack time is any time in the morning and afternoon and lunch is between 11:45 to 12:20.
- Christmas craft time- Over the next few weeks we will be inviting parents to come into our classroom to do a Christmas craft with out little ones. If you have a morning or afternoon that you wish to join us and make a craft we would love it. Here is what you need to do - You will need to come up with a craft idea for the kids, you will need to bring in the supplies (enough for each child) and then come in and work with small groups at a time to show them how to make the craft. It would have to be a simple enough craft that the kids would be able to do most of it on their own. If you are interested, please email me and we can find a time that works.
