It is actually October, wow, time is sure flying by. We have completed our first month of school and let me tell you, these little ones are pros. They have adjusted really well to our class routines and have settled in nicely. This week the little ones have taken an interest to the outdoors. They love to get out and play. Many kids are talking about their trips to the apple orchard and pumpkin patches and also walks outside to see the changes that are coming with this new season upon us. We have read many books in both French and English about fall, changing leaves and seasons and also lots about apples. We have looked at different kinds of apples, played stacking games and have done some counting with them. We have also looked at the life cycle of an apple and talked about how they grow. Many friends have great ideas to bring home their apple seeds and plant them in your garden (just an FYI).
We have spent some time learning about the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. They are loving the songs we have been singing to help us form our letters and learn their individual sounds. For those who already know their sounds and letters this is a great refresher and it will allow them to explore and also provided them with the opportunity to practise generating words that begin with certain letter sounds and to apply this knowledge in their writing and when using new technology.
In Math we are working on numbers to 10 for JK and beyond 10 for SK. We are doing lots of counting and have started our number talks. Our big focus right now is subatizing, recognizing a small group of objects without counting. We have been doing lots of dot pictures to help us with this. Some of our friends have taken to making surveys. They love travelling around the room with a clipboard and asking all their friends questions like 'which colour of apple do you like the best?' 'Do you think apples sink or float?' 'what is your favourite season?'.
Last week was the Terry Fox walk, we had such a great time. They had lots of questions about Terry Fox and were very proud to help out a great cause with all their donations.
Just a few reminders...

Thank you to everyone who has sent in supplies for our classroom. We are well stocked. We will let you know if anything else comes up, however, for now we are fully covered.
I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
